Only 2 hours north of Boston, Yarmouth, Maine is located on the shores of beautiful Casco Bay, well known for its island communities, commercial fishing industry, and recreational opportunities. The 8,500 residents of Yarmouth enjoy the convenience of being located between Portland, Maine’s largest city, and the outlet-shopping center of Freeport.
Yarmouth has a rich heritage as one of the earliest shipbuilding communities in Maine. The beautiful architecture of the town’s historic residences and buildings reflects this prosperous 19th century period. The Yarmouth Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of Yarmouth’s history, and the Village Improvement Society, organized in 1911, is actively committed to the restoration and preservation of many of Yarmouth’s historic buildings and parks.
Characterized as one of Portland’s northern suburbs, Yarmouth is home to professionals who work in neighboring Portland or Brunswick, local businessmen, and families who have made their living for generations fishing the waters of the Atlantic. Recently the town has become home to many retirees who have chosen a small town lifestyle, while at the same time enjoying the fine restaurants, theaters, and concerts in the greater Portland area.
But Yarmouth’s greatest strength comes from its citizens, young and old, newcomers and natives, whose spirit, pride and dedication to their community have made it as vital and prosperous today as it was during the golden age of shipbuilding.
The high level of citizen involvement in town affairs and the outpouring of volunteerism have contributed to Yarmouth’s reputation as a community with quality municipal services for its residents and a superior school system for its children. It is most importantly a town dedicated to the preservation of its past while making wise and intelligent decisions about its future. (Courtesy of the Town of Yarmouth)
