Originally a part of Falmouth, it was separated and incorporated as the 205th Maine town, known as Stroudwater, on February 14, 1814. The name was soon changed to Westbrook in honor of Colonel Westbrook. In 1871, the town was incorporated as a City. The City Charter was granted on March 1, 1889 and adopted in 1891.
Today's population is over 16,000 but Westbrook keeps its small town atmosphere. Riverbank Park, located along the Presumpscot River in the heart of the City, takes advantage of natural resources with walking trails, a playground, and landscaped open space. The Park is the setting for "Westbrook Together Days", a time for the local citizens together and have fun. On evenings during the summer, the park bandstand features free weekly concerts.
Noted for its efforts to attract new businesses via imaginative incentives, the City has diversified its industrial base. A vital growing area near Exit 8 of the Maine Turnpike is typical of the new business and industrial growth. Two successful industrial parks are expanding every year and S.D. Warren Company still calls Westbrook home.
