(Memorial Gymnasium at the University of Maine)
When residents of Orono speak of "Black Bears", they are referring to the mainstay of this small community: the University of Maine. Without a doubt, the presence of this wonderful center of education and culture has not only helped to diversify this small town in Maine, but has also given residents yet another reason to feel pride for their unique town.
Orono was incorporated in 1806 and much of the town's rich history is preserved on the campus of the university, from the architecture in its buildings to places such as the Hudson Museum. Orono is situated along the Stillwater and the Penobscot Rivers and offers a quiet and scenic setting for taking in the charm of the town. The downtown area is both historic and thriving, a haven for unique shops, restaurants, and historical attractions. Outdoor recreation is easily found in the nearby rivers, whether it be canoeing or fishing. Nearby Pushaw Lake is suitable for boating and provides more recreational options.
The University of Maine is a major employer of Orono's residents, and also a major contributor to the town's vibrancy. In addition to attending the school's Division I athletic events, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a star show at the university's Planetarium, take in some art at the Maine Center for the Arts, or visit the Page Farm & Home Museum, located in the last original agricultural building on the University of Maine campus.
Orono is located just minutes north of Bangor. Interstate 95 is less than a mile to the west and US 2 runs through downtown Orono.
