Brunswick was originally settled in 1628 along the falls of the Androscoggin River. Incorporated in 1738, it was named to honor the British House of Brunswick. The community has the charm of a college town, the bustle of light industry, and the economic health of a regional commercial center.
As the home of Bowdoin College and Brunswick Naval Air Station, Brunswick has a diverse population that greatly enriches the town. Several National Historic Districts with grand sea captains' mansions serve as testaments to the Greek Revival and Federal styles of architecture.
The grassy, tree-lined Town Mall (with gazebo) links Bowdoin College to the downtown shopping and service district. On the outskirts of town, other shopping districts along Pleasant Street and at Cook's Corner round out Brunswick's commercial base.
Industries include the manufacture of the famous L.L. Bean boot, fiberglass construction materials, and electronic switching devices, as well as several facilities of Bath Iron Works.
